Lawmakers in Pennsylvania have expressed strong opposition to a plan by Penn State University that could lead to the closure of its Schuylkill campus. Representatives Joanne Stehr, Tim Twardzik, Jamie Barton, Dane Watro, and Senator Dave Argall have all voiced concerns about the potential impact on local jobs and the regional economy.
Twardzik emphasized the importance of Penn State Schuylkill to the area, noting its growth in enrollment and contributions to the local workforce through its internship program. "Closing this campus would take away critical opportunities for our community," he stated.
Watro highlighted the school's role in providing higher education access to over 600 students without requiring them to relocate. He remarked on the importance of keeping educated young people in Pennsylvania as part of a long-term goal.
Stehr echoed these sentiments, pointing out that closing the campus would limit educational options for local students. She committed to working with her colleagues to keep it open.
Barton shared a personal connection, recalling his family's move to Schuylkill County due to his father's employment at Penn State Schuylkill. He stressed that maintaining the campus means preserving diverse academic opportunities for students.
The lawmakers are encouraging public participation through a survey regarding the potential closure. Argall reported significant public opposition: "In 24 hours, more than two thousand people took our survey."
Penn State Schuylkill has seen consistent enrollment growth since 2021 and hosts innovative programs like the Penn State Schuylkill Co-Op and an expanding nursing program addressing regional healthcare needs.
The legislators urge Penn State's administration to acknowledge these contributions and keep the campus operational.
