Nearly $60,000 in wildfire protection grants have been allocated to communities within the 107th Legislative District. This initiative aims to bolster fire safety across the Commonwealth, as announced by Representative Joanne Stehr of Northumberland and Schuylkill.
"I am so grateful that this funding has been awarded to our area to help enhance firefighting efforts in our communities," Stehr stated. "Ensuring we have the proper equipment and highly trained wildfire fighters is essential in protecting the natural ecosystem this state provides."
The grants distributed among Schuylkill County fire companies include: Good Will Hose Company of Cumbola receiving $2,000; Hegins Valley Fire Rescue with $5,613; Heights Fire Company No. 1 obtaining $12,500; and Tower City Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 getting $1,987.
In Northumberland County, grants were awarded to Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company for $12,500; Hickory Corners and Community Fire Company also for $12,500; and Ralpho Fire Company No. 1 for the same amount.
Priority was given to projects involving the purchase of wildfire suppression equipment and protective clothing. Grants can also be used for acquiring mobile or portable radios, installing dry hydrants, conducting wildfire prevention and mitigation work, training wildfire fighters, or converting and maintaining federal excess vehicles. These vehicles are provided to local departments showing significant needs and a commitment to equipping them for fire suppression.
Statewide, more than $850,000 in grant money was distributed through a program managed by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
