A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Schuylkill County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request was made by Coal Region News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request sought records under the Pennsylvania Right to Know Law, specifically asking for a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. The information requested includes each candidate's first, middle, and last name; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation.
In addition to these details, Coal Region News also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization dedicated to transparency and accountability in public institutions, Coal Region News has emphasized the importance of access to public records in fulfilling its professional responsibilities. In line with this commitment, the organization has asked for a fee waiver as a media professional under the provisions of the Pennsylvania Right to Know Law.
