Rep. Tim Twardzik and Sen. David Argall have announced that two communities in Schuylkill County will receive grants through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP) for recreational projects.
St. Clair Borough has been granted $64,175 to develop a youth basketball court at the Third Street Recreation Complex. Blythe Township has received $160,000 for renovations at Kaska Park to make it more enjoyable for residents.
“This funding will enhance recreational opportunities for families throughout our community,” said Twardzik. “The new youth basketball court in St. Clair will offer younger children a safe space to play and develop essential skills, while the upgrades to Kaska Park in Blythe Township will improve facilities for all, supporting healthy, active lifestyles for people of all ages. These projects will strengthen our community’s well-being and encourage physical activity for residents of every age group.”
The project in St. Clair involves creating a basketball court designed specifically for children in fourth grade and under, with features such as lower rims and a smaller court size suitable for younger players who may not be able to use existing courts typically used by older individuals.
In Blythe Township, improvements at Kaska Park include installing an ADA-accessible entrance and playground equipment, a wood carpet safety surface, and fencing. The existing basketball and tennis courts will undergo rehabilitation with resurfacing, restriping, and new equipment installations.
“I’m grateful this highly competitive state funding will provide new opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors,” said Argall. “Our communities are healthier and stronger when we have quality parks and trails for all to enjoy.”
The GTRP aims to support the development, rehabilitation, and improvement of public parks, greenways, trails, and other recreational spaces. These grants ensure residents have access to quality facilities that promote physical activity and community engagement.
