Rep. Doyle Heffley of Carbon County has informed residents about a recent development in the bear attack incident that took place in Jim Thorpe. The Pennsylvania Game Commission confirmed that the bear involved tested positive for rabies, which accounts for its unusual aggressive behavior.

Rabies cases in black bears are rare and usually isolated. Black bears generally do not show aggression towards humans. This incident was an uncommon occurrence, and the actions taken by the individual who shot the bear may have prevented further injuries.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission highlighted that rabies can affect all mammals, including bears. They urge anyone who notices wildlife acting abnormally to report it immediately by calling 1-833-PGC-WILD. Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions if they encounter strange wildlife behavior.

“I am in close communication with the Pennsylvania Game Commission as they continue to monitor the situation,” said Heffley. “While this was an unusual and unfortunate event, their guidance is vital in ensuring our community remains safe. I encourage residents to stay informed and report any wildlife that seems out of the ordinary.”

Heffley also advises the public to adhere to safety guidelines when dealing with bears or other wildlife and ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies.
