Student Recognition February 2022

North Pocono Middle School issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.

Aurora Lefever is the daughter of Andrew and Hilda Lefever. Aurora has taken math and science courses at NPHS since seventh grade, and has consistently challenged herself with a total of 12 AP courses during her time as a student at NPHS. She is the co-president and co-founder of the North Pocono Period Club, which dedicates itself to donating menstrual products to women and girls in need in the North Pocono community and works to promote women’s health. She also started a column in the Tri County Independent which she has written for since 2014 and has offered other North Pocono students a chance to be published in the newspaper. Aurora has competed in piano auditions and competitions since 2015 and has performed at Carnegie Hall 3 times. She was an attorney for the Mock Trial team for three years and has won Best Advocate. In 2019, she volunteered and translated with medical organization UHMLA which performed free-of-cost surgical procedures to low-income families in the Amazon Basin in Peru. She also received a 5 in AP Capstone Seminar and is now conducting an IRB-exempted sociological study through AP Capstone Research. Aurora is interested in eventually pursuing epidemiological research and public health initiatives at the international level.

Shivani Patel is the daughter of Hament and Alpa Patel. Shivani is taking advantage of her academic offerings by taking five AP classes her senior year. She is currently enrolled in AP Chemistry, AP Physics II, AP Psychology, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Calculus BC. By graduation, she will have taken 12 AP classes and has received high honors throughout her high school career. Shivani is involved in a number of extracurricular activities. She serves as chairman of the Science Olympiad team and Secretary of Mathletes. She is a Student Council representative and is a member of the National Honors Society, Red Cross Club, Minithon, and SADD. Furthermore, she was a member of the North Pocono tennis team and is a member of the North Pocono Track and Field team. Shivani plans to attend college to study biochemistry in hopes of eventually becoming a pathologist.

Savannah Slater, the daughter of John and Kelly Slater, has maintained a challenging course load throughout her high school career by taking 8 AP classes and 13 Accelerated courses. She has maintained high honor status throughout high school and is currently ranked 12th in her class. She finds time for many extracurricular activities despite her busy schedule, taking on leadership roles in many of them. She is the Co-Founder and President of PERIOD The Menstrual Movement at North Pocono High School, which focuses on diminishing the stigma of periods and providing menstrual health products to local food pantries, women’s shelters, and homeless shelters. She is also the National Honor Society Vice-President, Student Council Class Vice-President for the past 3 years, member of the GSA, member of the mock trial team, and a 4 year varsity starter for the softball team. She is currently employed at Covington Fitness, where she works 3 days a week, and spends her free time working with WOAR (Women Organized Against Rape) to implement a statewide educational curriculum on consent. Savannah committed to Williams College to pursue her academic career and continue her athletic career in softball. She plans on majoring in Political Science and Gender Studies.
