Reps. Tim Twardzik, Jamie Barton, Joanne Stehr, Dane Watro, and Sen. Dave Argall have voiced their opposition to Penn State’s plan that could lead to the closure of Penn State Schuylkill. They argue that closing this campus would threaten local employment, impact the regional economy negatively, and make higher education less accessible in northeast Pennsylvania.
Twardzik highlighted the importance of Penn State Schuylkill: “The campus has seen growth in enrollment and its internship program has strengthened our local workforce, while its nursing program has provided over 200 nurses to the area.” He expressed his commitment to keeping the campus open.
Watro emphasized the contributions of the school: “Penn State Schuylkill has made and continues to make significant contributions to the region… Losing it would be a major blow to the momentum we are now seeing in our region after years of hard work by so many.”
Stehr noted the opportunities provided by Penn State Schuylkill: “Closing the campus would eliminate opportunities and limit options for those who wish to build their futures in our region.”
Barton shared a personal connection: “My family moved to Schuylkill County in 1969 because my father accepted a position with Penn State Schuylkill… Keeping this campus means keeping that dream alive for so many students and families in our area.”
Argall mentioned community feedback against the closure: “In 24 hours, more than two thousand people took our survey, sharing their strong opposition to this potentially devastating plan by Penn State.”
The lawmakers encourage residents concerned about the potential closure to express their views through a one-question survey. They intend to present these opinions along with legislative opposition directly to Penn State leadership.
Penn State Schuylkill is unique within its system for consistent enrollment growth since 2021. It boasts innovative programs like the Co-Op initiative connecting students with job opportunities. The recently expanded nursing program also addresses healthcare worker shortages locally.
The legislators urge Penn State’s administration to consider these factors and keep Penn State Schuylkill operational.
