The October episode of Senator Dave Argall’s (R-29) local television program highlights the second Carbon County and Beyond Regional Tourism Summit, which took place at the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe. The summit, co-hosted by Representative Doyle Heffley (R-122), brought together about 100 business owners, borough officials, and residents to discuss ongoing efforts to attract more visitors to the region.

Senator Argall recalled past revitalization initiatives in Tamaqua that led to significant community improvements. “Decades ago, a similar meeting in Tamaqua resulted in the transformation of the abandoned junior high school where my parents once taught into the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center and the rebirth of the historic 1874 train station that was very close to demolition,” Argall said. “Because of these continued revitalization efforts, in the next few years, Temple University will open Pennsylvania’s first rural dental college in Tamaqua. Third- and fourth-year dental students will live and study in downtown Tamaqua while also providing much needed dental care to our communities.”

The event featured presentations from organizations such as the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau, Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, Panther Valley and White Haven Blueprint Community committees, Greater Hazleton Civic Partnership, and 9-11 National Memorial Trail Alliance.

At last year’s inaugural summit, participants identified both positive impacts of tourism—such as economic benefits—and challenges including parking shortages, traffic congestion, and housing affordability for Jim Thorpe residents. The group discussed how directing tourists to other nearby communities could help address these issues if properly planned and supported with investment.

Argall emphasized collaboration across communities: “The ongoing phenomenon of our revitalization is for real,” he said. “By working together, we can boost these efforts throughout the Panther Valley, Lehighton, Eckley, White Haven, Tamaqua and beyond.”
